Project 006: Haven of Hope - Palin, Guatemala

Project Description

You drive into this community of unpaved roads and cement buildings; you walk through a small path between buildings leading you to a mini city of homes for over 500 families constructed of rusted pieces of metal, wood, nylon and cardboard. No electricity, no water and no sanitation, just a dark shell which they call home. This is where the children in our new church-based feeding/ education center live. Their families struggle to provide food for their children and long for a hope for a brighter tomorrow. The pastor in this community felt alone, he saw the daily struggles of the people but had no resources to help the people. In February 2015 The Hope Movement developed a relationship with this church and designed a plan to open a program which is now reaching over 50 children and their families each week providing meals, education, counseling and spiritual guidance. The program empowers the church to answer their call to serve the poor; the people come for food but leave with Jesus and an everlasting hope transforming their homes and community into a haven of hope.

Empowering and Unifying the Church

The Hope Movement understands the importance of the church's responsibility to step outside of the four walls to serve the community. Often charities invest funds in buildings and salaries when there are many churches that already have a building, volunteers from their congregation and an established relationship with the community but they lack the financial resources and training to launch programs which incorporate spiritual and social outreach.

The Hope Movement partners with churches with a heart to serve and step outside of the comfort zone and develop a relationship with the church. We evaluate the community’s needs and the church's available resources. We then shake the comfort zone of the church to inspire the congregation to assist their Pastor in fulfilling the purpose of the church, provide financial resources for food and education expenses and provide on-going training and monitoring of the program. This allows the church to fulfill the vision of God and allows the Hope Movement to expand our reach, feeding and education more with less.

  • You are The Hope Movement, we are a team in the work of God, we can not fulfill our calling without you. Just as our calling is to go and work in the mission field to transform lives, you have a profound calling to give to help sustain the work being accomplished.

As the word of God has directed us in 2 Corinthians 9, "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
