Project 010: Hope for Orphans - Kenya

Project Description

In Kenya, Africa there is a wonderful man named Pastor Fredrick Manhanu. He pastors a small church in Bungoma and has a heart for the poor. For the last 5 years Pastor Fredrick has been working with 35 orphans who lost their parents because of HIV/AIDS, Malaria or abandonment. Not having an orphanage he did something creative, he called upon the church to be the hands of God and open their homes to these precious children. The church members responded and that birthed a foster program where church members are caretakers of these 35 orphans.

The Hope Movement is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit ministry registered in the United States, Guatemala and Kenya united with Pastor Fredrick and formed a board of Kenyan Christians to help ignite a movement a hope impacting communities and transforming them into havens of hope. Our team consists of Pastors, Church members, Nurses, Previously Orphaned Children, men and women, young and old who feel called by God to preach the Gospel and bring hope to those living in desperate situations.

Currently the ministry is caring for 35 children in our foster home program, with an additional 85 children in need of a loving home. Although the families caring for the children are doing the best they can in spite of their impoverished conditions, the children truly need to be located in one centralized location. They also are in need of improved living conditions as many sleep in small rooms with other children.

Expansion will allow The Hope Movement to meet the immediate needs of orphaned children by:

  • Purchasing 4 additional acres of land next to the current quarter acre of land to construct houses for the children and provide agriculture to sustain the ministries feeding programs.
  • Constructing 8 additional houses which will house 10 children in each home.
  • Purchasing Bunk beds, mattresses, blankets and mosquito nets.
  • Provide quality medical care to each child.
  • Provide scholarships to each child so that they can obtain a quality education.
  • Provide clothing, shoes and school uniforms for each child.
  • Develop an agriculture and animal husbandry program to provide for the nutrition needs of the children and widows.
  • Provide fertilizer to widows to help them farm their land providing their families with healthy food.
  • Provide housing repair assistance to widows whose homes are in dangerous risk of collapsing.
  • Drill a water well which we confirmed is 80 feet under the ground to provide healthy water to the orphanage and community.
  • Develop Bible Studies and plant churches to preach sound Gospel and make disciples of many throughout Kenya.

Haven of Hope Home for Children: Bungoma, Kenya

Because of the great need for a safe home for children, The Hope Movement has an extraordinary opportunity to expand our reach and open a home for children who have been orphaned do to the death of their parents, abandonment and abuse.

For all too many children, home is not a safe place. On any given day, thousands of children are orphaned because of the death of family members do to AIDS, malaria and other diseases; others have been abandoned or rescued from abusive situations. Kenya has the third highest number of HIV/AIDS orphans in the world, estimated at 890,000. The Hope Movement has been called to rescue children from the grips of hopelessness and have developed a home for those who have been orphaned, abandoned and abused by their families and society, providing them with a safe haven, a place to live, gain knowledge, and make new memories in a positive family atmosphere. Life for these children and teens is confusing and heartbreaking. They have suffered greatly at the hands of others, and have usually led unstable lives since facing traumatic situations - often shifting from parent to relative to living on the streets. They are hurt, discouraged and often emotionally and behaviorally disturbed, but we are answering the call of God to rescue and care for these precious children. Through our Haven of Hope Home for Children the lives of children are transformed and a new generation of leaders arise from the ashes of despair to illuminate the grace of God.

Residential - In a cozy Christian home-like setting, the Hope Movement cares for children who have been orphaned. Our model of care is unlike the typical residential program. Each cottage provides a home for six to ten children. Homes are staffed with loving house parents and nurturing child care professionals who have gone through an extensive background evaluation. The children eat meals as a family, spend recreational weekends together, learn together and participate in memorable moments of love.

Loving Child Care - Our team coordinates services for children and families. They serve as an advocate for the child by coordinating evaluations, medical, dental services, visitation with family members and school enrollment. We also provide for all of their needs from clothing, hygiene and other basic material needs along with love from a real family.

Counseling Services - The on-site Counseling Center is a place for the healing process to continue. Individual and family therapy is provided to help family members cope with separation and gain insight into its cause. This program offers children the opportunity to change negative behavior and begin restoration.

Each and every day, the Haven of Hope shares of the love of God with the most vulnerable children, revealing to them the grace of Jesus Christ and unconditional love that forms a generation of transformation.

A Teaching-Family Home:

  • Models a positive, Christian family-style environment.
  • Assists youth in developing sound values, high principles, good morals, passion for community service, and leadership skills.
  • Develops social, emotional, behavioral, academic, spiritual and self-help skills.
  • Provide Christian education and guidance making disciples and forming a generation of transformation.

Nutrition Program

The orphans in our care are our children and we provide them with quality food grown on our local farm three times a day every day of their lives filling the nutritional gaps that are so common for poor children. Many are in such desperate need that the meals literally save their lives. Daily meals provides needed vitamins, fuels studies, and nourishes growing bodies.

Quality Education

58 million primary-school-age children are not enrolled in school; 53 percent of these are girls. These children are at greater risk for exploitation, early marriage, and lower income-earning potential. We address barriers to education and work with communities and local governments to improve the quality of education children receive.

In Kenya education can be costly; we cover school fees and purchase uniforms and supplies. As parents it is essential that we provide quality education to our children. For our children who have been orphaned and live in extreme poverty, education can lift marginalized children out of the cycle of poverty, building their self-esteem, equipping them to support themselves and their future families.

Sustainable Agriculture

One in eight people in the world do not have enough to eat. Many poor farmers are unable to grow enough food to feed their own families, much less sell for additional income. That’s why we partner with communities to address immediate food needs — but also to grow sustainable food for the future.

On the land where our home for children is located we grow and harvest thousands of pounds of vegetables, fruits, beans and other locally grown plants allowing the ministry to be self-sufficient and reduce food costs. Our farm also raises cage free chickens for eggs and protein and our cow produces nutritious milk for our children.

We also have a plan to develop a tilapia farm on our land to produce fish for our children to enjoy, providing them with additional protein to their daily diet.

Clean Water

Nearly 1,000 children under age 5 die every day from diarrhea caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and improper hygiene. But we believe the global water and sanitation crisis can be solved within our lifetimes. That’s why we’re focused on providing clean water and sanitation to every man, woman, and child in every community we work in, including the most vulnerable populations in the hardest-to-reach places. We plan on drilling a water well on our land to provide clean drinking water for the children in our home and for those in our community who walk for hours each day to fetch contaminated water for their families. We also will provide water filter systems to others in the community to help prevent water-base illnesses.

Health Care

Today, nearly 18,000 children under age 5 will die of mostly preventable causes, such as diarrhea, malaria, and pneumonia. We focus on child and maternal health by promoting health and nutrition practices and preventing major causes of disease. As parents of orphaned children we are responsible for ensuring that they receive quality medical care. We have nurses on staff that provides immediate care and we prevent illnesses by providing mosquito nets, clean water and sanitation.

Widow Care

In a country where families face loss because of AIDS, malaria and other diseases, widows are often the most vulnerable in society. Women are forced to raise children, fetch water, work in the streets, and farm their land for food all alone with no support system. We select the most vulnerable widows in the community and assist them in becoming self-sufficient by offering counseling, spiritual guidance and prayer, assistance to their children, home repairs, water filters and fertilizer to farm their land to produce enough food for their entire family.

Empowering and Unifying the Church

The Hope Movement understands the importance of the church's responsibility to step outside of the four walls to serve the community. Often charities invest funds in buildings and salaries when there are many churches that already have a building, volunteers from their congregation and an established relationship with the community but they lack the financial resources and training to launch programs which incorporate spiritual and social outreach.

The Hope Movement partners with churches with a heart to serve and step outside of the comfort zone and develop a relationship with the church. We evaluate the community’s needs and the church's available resources. We then shake the comfort zone of the church to inspire the congregation to assist their Pastor in fulfilling the purpose of the church, provide financial resources for food and education expenses and provide on-going training and monitoring of the program. This allows the church to fulfill the vision of God and allows the Hope Movement to expand our reach, feeding and educating more people with less financial resources.

Church Planting

Witness a church that has been revived, that goes with the flow of God's agenda and not the agenda of men, allowing His presence to take control, witness young and old growing in the word of God as their lives and families are changed, witness a church that steps outside of the comfort zone of the four walls to reach those in need, witness communities transformed by the power of Jesus Christ.

The Hope Movement is planting churches with a unique design by God. Developing churches with a house church feel, time of edification and reflection giving people a moment to share from their heart and pray with one another, intimate worship that doesn’t follow the typical worship pattern but is rather guided by the presence of God and Biblical teaching to develop unashamed Holy Spirit led disciples who will go into all of the world and preach the gospel.

Hope Movement Alliance

A voluntary, strategic alliance to enhance our ability to achieve a common purpose by sharing risks, responsibilities, resources, and rewards, transforming communities into havens of hope.

The Hope Movement Alliance builds relationships with local churches, ministries, and non-profits, meeting on a monthly basis to unite in prayer and encouragement and develop strategic plans of action and unique life-transforming programs, sharing resources, conducting missions activities, and developing leadership through our specially designed curriculum, working together to bring lasting change to communities throughout the nation.

We provide grassroots churches, ministries, and non-profits extensive training and leadership development through our specially designed curriculum in group, one-on-one, and webinar meetings to transform their way of looking at outreach, developing a more effective and strategic way of reaching the hurting, collaborating with one another, managing their finances and accountability, understanding the importance of going with the flow of God and not following our own agenda, shaking the comfort zone and empowering them with the essential tools to bring lasting change to their communities.

Our mentors work in collaborations with our partners, and have access to utilize their facilities to conduct activities. Community partners through our Hope Movement Alliance such as Churches, Ministries, Non-profits, and Community Organizations who desire to utilize our Generation of Transformation program are provided extensive training on implementing the program, incorporating community outreach, and program evaluation. Community partners provide monthly evaluation reports to the Hope Movement office to monitor their process and to offer on-going training and guidance.

The Alliance meets on a monthly basis to encourage one another, share their personal experiences, discuss their needs and share resources, and develop a strategic plan of action for that month selecting a community to conquer for good, establishing a Hope Movement within that community to maintain the transformation for many years to come.

Evangelism

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19

We are passionate about our call to preach the Gospel and make disciples. We provide Christian education to the children in our home; edify the church through training and encouragement, establish local Theology Bible studies and distribute Bibles and literature. We step outside of the four walls to preach throughout the community planting seeds of the Gospel in the hearts of every soul we come into contact with and pray that the Holy Spirit completes the work bringing them to salvation.
